A Guide to Advanced Immune Support Ingredients

Most people have heard of vitamins C and D and the mineral zinc for immune support—but those are only part of the picture. Researchers continue to study a wide range of nutrients, botanicals, mushrooms, probiotics, and specialty compounds that help support immune cell function, antioxidant defenses, and the body’s natural protective systems. If you’re looking to go beyond the basics for daily immune support, these are some of the most researched ingredients to know.

  • Homeostasis: a stable or balanced internal environment in the body that is conducive to overall health.
  • Innate immune response: your body's built-in first line of defense that behaves the same way to all perceived threats or invasions.

  • Elderberry—a natural source of antioxidants and anthocyanins known to influence innate immune cell activity.2

The immune support delivered by these mushrooms is linked to the beta glucans they provide. Beta glucans are a type of polysaccharide that are associated with antioxidant defense in addition to serving as what’s called a “biological response modulator.” This means that they contribute to the intensity of the body’s immune response by activating innate immune cells and regulating the adaptive immune response.7 By incorporating these mushrooms into your health routine, you can add a boost to your body’s immune response when it’s needed most.

 

Probiotics and Gut Health

Promoting sustained immune wellness means also keeping your gut health in mind. This is because about 70% of your immune system is located in the gut microbiome, where local immune mucosal responses, epithelial integrity, and microbiota balance all play central roles. In this environment, beneficial (“probiotic”) bacteria including Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium offer positive support, such as regulating protective immune activity.8 Additionally, beneficial microbiota are known to contribute to what is called gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) within the GI tract. GALT plays a critical role in gut homeostasis and the continual generation of specialized immune cells and antibodies.9

Antioxidants Beyond Vitamin C

Another group of advanced immune supplements beyond vitamins is commonly known as antioxidants and can include:

  • NAC— An abbreviation for N-acetyl L-cysteine, a precursor to the powerful antioxidant glutathione.
  • Quercetin—bioflavonoid plant pigment delivering antioxidant defense.
  • Alpha Lipoic Acid—soluble in both water and fat, this antioxidant vitamin-like chemical operates in multiple parts of the body protecting against oxidative stress.
  • Selenium—antioxidant trace mineral that promotes immune function.

These antioxidants provide additional protection to the cells by defending against oxidative stress that can be caused during times of immune activation. During such times, free radicals (reactive compounds featuring an impaired electron in their outer orbital) are formed and may cause harm to the DNA, lipids, or proteins of cells. Antioxidants, including in supplement form, have been shown to offer protection against this harm by providing a stable electron to the free radical molecules, thus rendering them inactive.10

 

Advanced Nutritional Support

When it comes to supporting immune health, some allies may not immediately come to mind. Among those you might want to integrate into your routine is colostrum. This natural dairy product is packed with antibodies and nutrients for potent immune support.
