Resveratrol: Greatness from Grape Skin and other Powerful Plants

Later, as more researchers became fascinated by this "paradox," it was determined that the country's love of wine—red wine, in particular—was the reason behind the observations. Further research showed that yes, wine could, in fact, provide a certain level of dietary protection. The seeds of grapes contain antioxidants in the form of polyphenols and proanthocyanidins, which became the focus of "French Paradox" investigations. Then, things got really interesting.

Just as the scientific community was embracing the overwhelming evidence showing that grape seed polyphenols and proanthocyanidins did indeed nourish and protect the heart and other important aspects of health, a new agent was discovered. Resveratrol was identified not in the seed but in the skin of the grape, opening up a whole new avenue for scientific inquiry.

Now we have the new report that's swept the media from coast to coast— a Harvard scientist saying resveratrol is the most promising substance ever found to protect our health from the results of poor dietary and lifestyle habits. Resveratrol is getting a lot of positive press in the mainstream media. What can you tell me about your resveratrol products?

We’ve read the latest reports surrounding resveratrol, a potent polyphenol found in grapes, wine, peanuts, mulberries and other plants. Specifically, resveratrol is a phytoalexin, a compound that acts as a plant’s natural defense system. The current media hype focuses on red wine as the primary source of resveratrol; however, only relatively small amounts naturally occur in red wine. Depending on the growing conditions, the type of red wine produced, and many other factors, an ounce of red wine could contain anywhere from 14 micrograms to as much as 284 micrograms. Regrettably, for fans of Chardonnay, white wines do not contain measurable amounts of resveratrol; unlike the reds, they’re not exposed to the resveratrol-containing grape skins in the winemaking process.
