Acti-Joint® Activates Your Joint Health 3 Ways
Comprehensive Formula Features Pharmaceutical-Grade Chondroitin
Swanson Health Products® is proud to introduce Acti-Joint, the only joint-care complex in America featuring pharmaceutical-grade chondroitin sulfate from European nutraceutical specialists Bioiberica. Anna Torrent, Bioiberica’s lead researcher and developer for Acti-Joint, recently sat down with us to explain why this advanced nutrient complex is the best choice for natural support of joint health and mobility.
SWANSON: Acti-Joint is a proprietary nutraceutical complex featuring ingredients from Bioiberica. What should customers know about your company and your ingredients?
TORRENT: Bioiberica is a global organization based in Barcelona, Spain. We were founded in 1975 as a biomedical company specializing in research and production of biomolecules for use in the pharmaceutical, dietary supplement, veterinary and agricultural industries.
Our core specialty is natural ingredients relating to joint health. In the U.S., these products are sold as dietary supplements. In many European countries, they are classified under different guidelines and can be found in preparations that are available by prescription from healthcare professionals.
Bioiberica is recognized for having established the benchmarks for quality composition used by governing agencies and biomedical researchers around the world. For instance, when the National Institutes of Health in the U.S. evaluated chondroitin sulfate products for use in their landmark clinical trials, only Bioiberica’s chondroitin sulfate met their criteria. They even published a detailed paper on their selection process in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association.
SWANSON: That’s quite an endorsement! Acti-Joint features that very same chondroitin, is that correct?
TORRENT: That is correct. Our chondroitin sulfate is the only 99.9% pure chondroitin sulfate available in North America and it is available in the U.S. only as part of the Acti-Joint complex. In evaluating chondroitin sulfate (CS) products, NIH and others have found that only Bioiberica CS demonstrates the consistency, stability and purity necessary for clinical evaluation.
Purity and production processes are also important for optimum benefit. A study published earlier this year demonstrated the superiority of Bioiberica CS in comparison to two other commercial products. One product was pig-derived while the other, like our product, was bovine-derived. Not only did the pig-derived material not display the effects of the others; evidence suggested it may actually be counterproductive. And while the competing bovine-derived material did demonstrate some activity related to two of the three markers studied, only our 99.9% pure bovine CS demonstrated activity related to all three markers, with the third being vital to the real-world benefits of supplementation.
It’s also important to note that because our chondroitin sulfate is 99.9% pure, the dosage necessary to achieve results is a lot lower than you’ll find with other products. People may compare the label to their current product and think that they are getting less, but that is not the case. Our pure, pharmaceutical-grade chondroitin requires a lower dosage and is therefore more economical thanks to its pure composition.
SWANSON: So Acti-Joint is the only source for 99.9% pure chondroitin in the U.S., but it also contains two other key ingredients. If the chondroitin itself is so good, why not just take it by itself?
TORRENT: That’s a very good question with a very simple answer—our joints are complex mechanisms involving a variety of structures that each need specific nourishment. We designed Acti-Joint to address the three primary structures and functions within the joints.
SWANSON: What are the three components of healthy joints, and how does Acti-Joint address each one?
TORRENT: First and foremost is what everyone automatically thinks of in relation to joints, which is cartilage. Cartilage has mechanical characteristics necessary for frictionless movement of joints. The collagen/proteoglycan composition of the matrix endows the cartilage with tensile strength and resistance to compressive loads. While some wear can be expected—after all, we ask a lot from our joints year after year—there are ways to give back.
Glucosamine and chondroitin are primary components of healthy cartilage. Each contribute to both structure and function, helping to keep the tissue strong and resilient yet supple enough to support full and free movement. Research shows that dietary intake can help provide cartilage the glucosamine and chondroitin it needs, thereby supporting joint health and function.
But it’s important to acknowledge that cartilage is simply the connective tissue between the bones that come together in the joint. Another component of healthy joints is the subchondral bone, the bone structures beneath the cartilage.
Evidence suggests that breakdown of subchondral bone also occurs in aging joints. Emerging research indicates a role for glucosamine and chondroitin in helping to maintain healthy subchondral bone.
While investigations in this area are relatively new, much of the work is being supported by Bioiberica and embraced by some of the leading experts and journals in the field. These studies are shedding new light on the benefits glucosamine and chondroitin may provide and opening up exciting new avenues for understanding how to effectively nourish joint health in every way.
SWANSON: It’s interesting to know that while so much focus is placed on cartilage, glucosamine and chondroitin may actually be doing more than we thought by supporting subchondral bone as well. What is the third component of joint health addressed by the Acti-Joint® complex?
TORRENT: The third and very important aspect of joint health is the fluid in and around the joint, called synovial fluid. This viscous liquid, which lubricates the joint and interacts with cartilage, is secreted by a soft tissue within the joint cavity called the synovial membrane.
Synovial fluid is composed largely of hyaluronic acid (HA). Many people may be aware of HA, as it has become a popular ingredient in beauty care products in recent years. But although the skin, too, contains HA for much the same purpose (it helps attract and retain moisture), the HA in your skin is very different from the HA in your joints.
Acti-Joint delivers HA in the form of Hyal-Joint®, the most active form of oral HA available for joint health support. Hyal-Joint delivers HA with a specific molecular weight along with other naturally occurring constituents important for the synovial membrane and synovial fluid itself. These constituents, including collagen and glycosaminoglycans, are not found in other oral HA supplements.
Clinical research shows Hyal-Joint is two to four times more active in nourishing synovial fluid than regular hyaluronic acid.
SWANSON: Many of our customers have found success by adding Hyal-Joint to their joint health regimens, and I know that those who use it will appreciate this new complex that brings together the three leading joint-health supplements.
TORRENT: Acti-Joint does, in fact, bring together the three leading supplements for joint health; but it’s more than a simple combination. It’s the high quality of the ingredients and the precision combination that counts. No other complex in the U.S. delivers our pharmaceutical-grade glucosamine and chondroitin together.
