For centuries in traditional Chinese herbalism, barberry bark has been recognized as a great aid in cleansing the gastrointestinal tract. As with so many traditional herbs, analysis in a lab verifies that there is something unique in the herb's makeup. In this case, the bark of barberry roots proves to be a source of alkaloids, the most active of which is berberine. Berberine-containing plants have historically been given to support the body's ability to detox. Barberry bark has also been a long-time favorite for supporting bowel regularity and soothing the occasional and mild bout of stomach or bowel discomfort.
