You’ve heard of probiotics, the living organisms that colonize our gastrointestinal tract and beyond to keep our inner ecology balanced and healthy. Now get ready for the next evolution in human microbial science: immunobiotics are the new frontier. Defined as “microbes that promote immune system health through activation of gut immunity,” immunobiotics share properties of probiotics but work through specific mechanisms to promote immune function that begins in the gut and impacts the entire body. Your immune system is a comprehensive network of defenses that includes the microbiome in your gut, your oral and nasal passages, your skin and more. Probiotics affect all of these areas, so promoting a healthy balance of beneficial bacteria throughout the body is key to optimal immune function.
Immuno-LP20™ is the first immunobiotic to emerge on the world market. Already established in Japan where it was developed by Japanese scientists, Immuno-LP20 is a heat-killed strain of Lactobacillus plantarum (L-137), a lactic acid bacteria commonly found in a wide variety of fermented foods. As a live organism, L. plantarum is considered a beneficial probiotic, but its immune-supporting benefits are inhibited by its structure and lack of stability within digestive fluid. Immuno-LP20 is heat treated at a precise moment during the growth phase to break down the cell membrane and components, eliminating the inhibitors and stabilizing the product for survival in the gastric fluids. This allows for a powerful stimulating effect on the production of IL-12, an important factor in immune system function.
Research shows that Immuno-LP20 is active within the small intestine, where it passes through the intestinal lumen to stimulate production of IL-2 and IFN-β. IL-12, in turn, produces T cells and activates effector cells such as NK cells and CTLs. IFN-β is one of the most important cytokines directly involved in immune defense.

FAQ
- What Are the Benefits of Lactobacillus plantarum?
Lactobacillus plantarum is a beneficial probiotic strain that helps support digestive health and a healthy balance of microorganisms in the digestive tract. It is commonly used to support gastrointestinal wellness, maintain a healthy gut microbiome, and promote overall digestive function as part of a daily wellness routine. - What Is the Difference Between Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus acidophilus?
Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus acidophilus are both beneficial probiotic strains, but they are distinct microorganisms with unique characteristics. Each strain plays a different role in supporting the gut microbiome and digestive health. Because different probiotic strains offer different benefits, many probiotic supplements include multiple strains to provide broader digestive and gastrointestinal support. - What Are CFUs in Lactobacillus plantarum Supplements?
CFU stands for Colony Forming Units, a measurement used to indicate the number of viable probiotic microorganisms in a supplement. In Lactobacillus plantarum products, the CFU count represents the amount of beneficial probiotic bacteria provided per serving. CFUs help consumers understand the potency of a probiotic supplement and the quantity of live microorganisms it delivers. - What Is Lactobacillus plantarum L-137?
Lactobacillus plantarum L-137 is a specific strain of Lactobacillus plantarum that has been studied for its ability to support immune health and overall wellness. Like other probiotic strains, L-137 has unique characteristics that distinguish it from other beneficial microorganisms. Strain-specific probiotics are often selected for targeted wellness applications, and Lactobacillus plantarum L-137 is commonly used in supplements designed to support a healthy immune response as part of a balanced lifestyle. - Is Swanson Probiotics Immuno-LP20® Suitable for Special Diets?
Yes. Swanson Probiotics Immuno-LP20® is vegetarian and made with non-GMO ingredients, making it a convenient choice for individuals seeking a supplement that aligns with these dietary preferences.
