FAQ
- What does 5-HTP do in the body?
5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is a naturally occurring amino acid compound that serves as the direct precursor to serotonin, an important neurotransmitter involved in regulating mood, sleep, appetite, and nervous system function. Because 5-HTP is one step closer to serotonin than L-tryptophan, the body can readily convert it to support healthy serotonin production. - How does 5-HTP support mood and emotional well-being?
5-HTP supports mood by providing the building blocks needed for the body's natural production of serotonin. Healthy serotonin levels help support emotional well-being, promote a positive mood, and contribute to normal communication between nerve cells. - How does 5-HTP support healthy sleep?
Serotonin produced from 5-HTP serves as a precursor to melatonin, the hormone that helps regulate the body's natural sleep-wake cycle. By supporting healthy serotonin and subsequent melatonin production, 5-HTP helps promote restful sleep and healthy sleep patterns. - How is 5-HTP different from L-tryptophan?
L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid obtained through the diet, while 5-HTP is a naturally occurring intermediate the body produces from L-tryptophan before converting it into serotonin. Because 5-HTP is one step closer in this metabolic pathway, it bypasses the initial conversion required for L-tryptophan and can more directly support the body's natural serotonin production. - Is Swanson 5-HTP suitable for special diets?
Yes. Swanson 5-HTP is vegan and vegetarian, as well as non-GMO, gluten free, and dairy free, making it a great choice for a variety of dietary preferences and lifestyles.
