Native to North America, slippery elm (Ulmus rubra) is a species of elm tree with a long history of use in herbal medicine. Its red inner bark contains a sticky mixture of sugars, called mucilage, that becomes a slick gel when coming in contact with water. This thick substance is thought to be responsible for the herb's soothing properties.
