Support cleanse and detox effort with Swanson Full Spectrum Barberry Root Bark. For centuries in traditional Chinese herbalism, barberry bark has been recognized as a great aid in cleansing the gastrointestinal tract. As with so many traditional herbs, analysis in a lab verifies that there is something unique in the herb's makeup. In this case, the bark of barberry roots proves to be a source of alkaloids, the most active of which is berberine. Berberine-containing plants have historically been given to support the body's ability to detox. Barberry bark has also been a long-time favorite for supporting bowel regularity and soothing the occasional and mild bout of stomach or bowel discomfort.

FAQ
- What does barberry do in the body?
Barberry contains naturally occurring bioactive compounds, including the alkaloid berberine, that support several aspects of metabolic and digestive health. These compounds have been studied for their ability to support healthy glucose and lipid metabolism, antioxidant defenses, and normal digestive function. Together, they help promote overall metabolic wellness as part of a healthy lifestyle. - What is berberine, and how is it related to barberry?
Berberine is one of the primary bioactive alkaloids naturally found in the roots, bark, and stems of barberry (Berberis vulgaris). While barberry provides berberine alongside other naturally occurring plant compounds, berberine supplements typically contain a concentrated amount of the isolated alkaloid. Both whole barberry and berberine have been studied for their ability to support healthy metabolic function. - How does barberry support metabolic health?
The berberine and other naturally occurring plant compounds in barberry have been studied for their role in supporting healthy glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism, and cellular energy regulation. These bioactive constituents also provide antioxidant activity that helps protect cells from oxidative stress, supporting overall metabolic health and healthy energy utilization. - Why choose a full-spectrum herbal supplement?
Full-spectrum herbal supplements use the whole herb rather than an isolated compound or highly concentrated extract. This approach preserves the herb's naturally occurring phytochemicals—including flavonoids, polyphenols, essential oils, and other plant constituents—in proportions found in nature. Many people choose full-spectrum herbs because they provide a more traditional approach to botanical supplementation, reflecting how these plants have been used for centuries. - Is Swanson Full Spectrum Barberry Root Bark suitable for special diets?
Swanson Full Spectrum Barberry Root Bark is made with non-GMO ingredients. It is not suitable for vegan or vegetarian lifestyles because it contains a gelatin capsule. This product is also not formulated or certified to be gluten free, so individuals with gluten sensitivities should review the ingredient list before use.
