Medicine Cabinet Makeover: Tips for Cleaning Out Your Medicine Cabinet
Lindsey Toth, MS, RD • October 19, 2017

It’s fall and the holiday season is right around the corner, which means New Year’s resolutions are on the horizon too. Instead of waiting until you turn the calendar to January to clean out your medicine cabinet, consider autumn as a good time to review your health and wellness goals, plus take a hard look at what is in your medicine cabinet. Get yourself on the right track every morning well ahead of the hustle and bustle of the holiday season by giving your medicine cabinet a makeover today.

Recently, Pharmacist and Professor of Pharmacy and Therapeutics Dr. Ed Krenzelok shared expert tips on knowing when it’s time to purge items from your medicine cabinet and what products may help promote your health and wellness goals.

We’re excited to share the full medicine cabinet makeover segment with our Swanson Health community.1 Don’t wait until spring to clean out your medicine cabinet.

Here are four of Dr. Krenzelok’s tips for cleaning out and keeping a healthy medicine cabinet:

  • When in doubt, throw it out: Items have a shelf life, especially once you’ve opened the bottle. It’s important to review expiration dates and consider tossing items without expiration dates that have been opened for about a year.
  • Keep or replenish everyday basics: Keep essentials for good oral hygiene and wellness such as toothpaste, mouthwash, lozenges and supplements like probiotics stocked throughout the year.
  • Rethink storage locations for medications:  Dr. Krenzelok notes that humidity in the bathroom can affect medications. Plus, it's important that medications are stored in areas that can be child-proofed. Despite its name, a medicine cabinet may not be the best place to store medicines.
  • Discard medications safely: Instead of tossing medications in the trash where they end up in landfills or flushing medications down the toilet where they can end up in the environment, seek out community medication take-back programs or check with your nearest pharmacy to dispose of unneeded or old medications.

Your medicine cabinet can be a great tool to help you start each morning with your health and wellness goals in mind.
