What is Triphala?

Recently, the buzz surrounding this supplement has picked up quite a bit. Despite a similar sounding name, triphala does not come from Truffula Trees. :)

Instead triphala or triphala fruit is an ayurvedic herbal formula that contains the following three (tri-phala) fruits.

1) Amla or Amalaki - This fruit is commonly known as Indian Gooseberry and comes from the deciduous tree, Phyllanthus emblica. A good source of antioxidants, it has been studied for potential benefits for the health of bones, the pancreas, cholesterol levels and more.

2) Behada - In Southeast Asia, you can find the Terminalia bellirica tree. "Bibhitaki" is how the fruit form of this tree is known in traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine, where it has been traditionally used for healthy plasma, muscle and bones.

3) Harada - The small nutlike fruit on the Terminalia chebula tree is used for its beneficial effects for just about everything: Ayurvedic and Tibetan traditions regard it as a universal panacea.

Dosage is a common question for someone looking to try a triphala supplement. If you're taking a standardized extract, one 250 mg capsule per day is sufficient. If you are taking the Swanson Premium product, the recommended dosage is 1,000 mg (two 500 mg caps), 2-3 times per day.

One of the best features of triphala is that it is safe for everyday use.
