Just when you thought you’d run out of ways to use coconut oil—here’s one more! Take it outdoors and introduce coconut oil to your favorite grilled foods. Prepare to be impressed.

Why grill with coconut oil, you ask?

Coconut oil has a higher smoke point than olive oil. It’s not only great for grilling, but also broiling, sautéing and stir frying. It’s a more natural choice than vegetable oil, and it offers multiple health benefits.

Even though coconut oil and other alternatives have similar calorie and total fat content, coconut oil is high in medium-chain triglycerides that the body can metabolize quickly and use for energy.

How to Grill with Coconut Oil

  • Make a marinade by combining melted coconut oil with spices in a zip top bag. Add chicken or fish, and marinate for 2-4 hours.
  • Toss raw veggies in coconut oil before adding the spices. This will not only add flavor to the veggies, but it’ll also help the spices stick before grilling. Put large vegetable pieces right on the grill.
  • Before grilling lean meats, rub a small amount of coconut oil on the grill. Dip a paper towel in coconut oil and use tongs to rub the towel along the grill.
  • Grease a tinfoil pan before adding fish or meat.
  • Chop up your favorite veggies and combine them in a tin foil packet with coconut oil and spices. Place on the grill.
  • Make a glaze (see recipe below) and add it to the meat about halfway through cooking.
