A few days ago, I watched a TV show and theguest that day was Dr. Alejandro Junger, the author of Clean, The Revolutionary Program to Restore the Body's Natural Ability to Heal Itself, who was introducing what they called the “Detox Diet”.
What caught my attention was that this detoxing program was actually a food program that promotes weight loss. Most of the detoxing programs I had heard of in the past involved consuming very little food as a way to rid the body of harmful toxins.
While the Detox Diet does call for the elimination of some food, it is centered around ten specific types of food that Dr. Junger says flushes the fat out of the intestines. This plan is used as a diet program to promote weight loss. Dr. Junger says the weight loss is a result of the bacteria balance in the gut. He calls for eliminating foods that feed bad bacteria in the intestines, which increases the amount of good bacteria, resulting in lost weight.
Foods to Eliminate in the Detox Diet:
- Dairy and egg
- Gluten
- Processed sugar
- Coffee, soda and alcohol
- Beef and pork
- Creamed vegetables
- Peanuts
This list may make it seem like the majority of things you eat on a daily basis need to be tossed out. So what’s left to eat? Plenty! By building your meals around these specific foods, you’ll look good on the outside and feel good on the inside.
10 Foods to Eat in the Detox Diet:
- Green, leafy vegetables and cruciferous vegetables (for example spinach, brussel sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower )
- Cold water fish (like salmon and tuna)
- Free range, pasture chicken
- Fresh berries (things like blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and blackberries)
- Apple cider vinegar
- Water with lemon
- Herbal teas
- Unsweetened coconut milk
- Coconut oil
- Plant-based protein powder
