L- in front of the amino acid (ex: L-Tyrosine) means that the amino acid is in its free form. The L- tells us that the amino acid is not attached to other amino acids with peptide bonds forming a chain called a protein. L- also tells us that the amino acid is on its own and in the form that your body would put it in so that you can absorb it. L- means free-form.
