What Kind of Supplements Support Eye Health?
Vitamins and Supplements FAQs • September 3, 2011
Question: After working all day at the computer, my eyes often feel strained and tired. Are there any supplements that may support my eye health? Do you have any other suggestions?

Eyestrain, one of the adverse effects of frequent computer use, makes it painful to focus and can even develop into distressing headaches. Although, dietary supplements cannot “cure” eyestrain, many nutrients available in supplement form can provide potent eye health support. Retinol, also known as vitamin A, allows the rods and cones in the retina to adjust to light changes, sending images to the visual centers of the brain. Getting the right amount of vitamin A for optimal vision health is a good start in addressing eyestrain. The RDI for vitamin A is 5,000 IU for men and 4,000 IU for women. Vitamin A, a fat-soluble vitamin that should be taken with food, can be toxic in large doses over 10,000 IU. Beta-carotene, found in carrots and other fruits and vegetables, can be converted into vitamin A in the intestinal tract. Free-radical-fighting botanicals such as bilberry and eyebright provide specific protection for delicate eye tissues. Used in Europe since the 12th century, eyebright is often prepared as tea. Bilberry, rich in anthocyanidins, supports normal formation of connective tissue and strengthens capillaries. Our Swanson Superior Herbs Bilberry Extract is standardized for guaranteed potency of 25% anthocyanidins.

A few pragmatic changes may help reduce eyestrain. Evaluate the position and location of your computer screen, and keep the screen clean and streak-free. Ensure that you have enough focused lighting. Importantly, take frequent breaks and look away from your screen, focusing on something at a different distance. Finally, vary your tasks throughout the day, so your eyes may refocus and rest.
