Scientists have found that many of the benefits of aerobic and anaerobic exercise stem from the activity of an enzyme known as 5’ adenosine monophophate-activated protein kinase, or AMP-k, often called the “metabolic master switch.” During exercise, physical stress on the muscles and bones triggers the up- regulation of a family of proteins known as sestrins, which in turn activate the AMP-k enzyme.
