Although it may not be a favorite topic of discussion, there is one highly important reason to consider your colon. It’s been estimated that when we regularly keep the colon clean, we’re 90% of the way to good health! The colon is the place where food collects as waste material after nutrients have been extracted and sent to the bloodstream. Retained debris in the colon leads to the absorption of toxins and its multitude of consequences.


The Key to Colon Health is Largely Nutritional

A high fiber, low fat diet with lots of fresh foods is the best way to keep your colon healthy, and it will repay you for thinking so highly of it with energy to spare. Here are a few dietary changes that you can incorporate into your lifestyle with minimum effort and big rewards.

  • Switch from beef to buffalo meat. While beef is very high in saturated fat, you’ll notice that even when you fry buffalo, there is no fat in the pan whatsoever. The taste is terrific, too!
  • Always choose whole grain bread over white bread. It contains anywhere from 2 to 6 times the fiber of white bread depending on much the grain has been processed.
  • Eliminate coffee and other caffeine drinks from your diet, as they are highly acidic and hard on the colon. Drink either pure, bottled water or herbal tea as a healthy and cleansing substitute.
  • Instead of two or three large meals, eat smaller amounts of food more often throughout the day—and be sure to chew food thoroughly. Let the saliva in your mouth start the digestive process just as it was designed to do.
  • Start with 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day, and increase it to a daily total of 9. Fruits and vegetables add significant amounts of fiber to the diet as well as many antioxidants and phytochemicals that keep colon tissues healthy. Three Primary Supplements for Colon Health

  1. Fiber—Learn to read food labels, zeroing in on the fiber content of every item. Men require at least 38 grams of fiber per day and women need 25 grams per day to help keep the colon healthy. A significant portion of the day’s requirement will come from food, but supplements offer much-needed assistance in making up the difference.
  2. Probiotics/Acidophilus—They keep a healthy balance of microflora in the colon, which greatly contributes to the health of the elimination system. Don’t underestimate the power of probiotics!

The colon really responds to this kind of care, and one of the most effective ways to cleanse it is by periodic fasting. There are several good books outlining programs of intensive colon cleansing that you can find online or at your local bookstore. However, simply following the points outlined above will be one giant step towards gaining or maintaining colon health—assuredly, the results will be noticed.
