Help Brighten Up Your View of Life…Naturally
It seems that life in general has gotten faster and more stressful over the years. Economic and other issues like families and relationships can have an effect on your emotional health. Add to it a poor diet and minimal exercise, and the result can be less than sunny.
Sometimes the cause is purely physical—or more to the point, chemical. It's a known fact that our brains produce a neurotransmitter called serotonin, and it has jokingly been referred to as the "happy hormone" because adequate levels of serotonin are required in order to feel emotionally and socially balanced. In order to make serotonin, the body requires the raw material to do so, and a direct precursor of serotonin is a compound called 5-hydroxytryptophan or 5-HTP for short.
Dietary supplements of 5-HTP are produced from griffonia beans, off the African shrub Griffonia simplicifolia. Our bodies also make 5-HTP from an amino acid called tryptophan, found in protein foods like dairy, nuts, meat, fish and poultry. You know how everybody needs a nap after a big Thanksgiving dinner? It's not just the volume of food consumed. A lot of the blame (or "credit," depending on how badly you wanted a nap) goes specifically to the turkey for its high tryptophan content. Tryptophan is a precursor of 5-HTP, which is a precursor of serotonin, a hormone that influences sleep patterns and dreaming.
Why can't you just eat more turkey to boost your mood?
Well, you can, but it won't have nearly the same effect as a 5-HTP supplement, and here's why. Much of the tryptophan we eat is processed along different biochemical pathways and won't necessarily be used by the brain to make serotonin. On the other hand, 5-HTP is the direct precursor of serotonin, and its smaller molecule size makes it readily available to the brain. However, 5-HTP supplements may make you just as sleepy as turkey does, so many people take it shortly before retiring for the night. Or if you take it in divided daily doses, save the biggest dose for bedtime. You'll even find 5-HTP in some natural sleep formulas. It really does work, and you won't wake up the next morning feeling groggy and craving another 40 winks.
Are there any safety issues associated with 5-HTP?
First of all, please be assured that the problem with tryptophan that occurred almost 20 years ago is not related in any way to today's 5-HTP supplements, and yes, the supplement is safe when taken as directed.
In 1989 the FDA banned tryptophan in the United States after a contaminated batch from Japan caused a serious illness called eosinophilia myalgia syndrome (EMS). The outbreak of EMS was due to impurities in the manufacturing process of the supplements by this particular company, however, and not to tryptophan supplements in general. The fact that it was still legal to include tryptophan in infant formulas is strong evidence to support its safety, and the ban on tryptophan has since been lifted.
However, we do have one word of caution for you. More is not better. It is always best to speak with your healthcare professional before taking this type of supplement along with any prescription medication.
