What is D-Ribose?

Question: You mentioned in an email offer that D-Ribose has been one of your top requested items for some time now. For those of us who are not familiar with it, what is ribose?

The technical definition of D-Ribose is a sweet, solid, water-soluble substance. In the United States, it is commonly referred to as simply “ribose.” It is important to note that ribose and D-Ribose are identical in chemical make-up. Manufacturers use the two terms interchangeably.

D-Ribose is made naturally in the body from glucose. Since ribose is ubiquitous in living matter, it is ingested in our diets. It is present in small amounts in many foods of plant or animal origin. Ribose, which is fundamental to the existence of all living cells, functions as a regulator in the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is the most basic source of all cellular energy. Ribose is also the carbohydrate backbone of our genetic material: DNA and RNA, nucleic acids, glycogen and other metabolic compounds.

Our heart and muscle cells contain the energy pools of ATP. Without ATP, our tissues would simply stop working. High levels of cellular energy are required to keep the tissues running at their peak. D-Ribose is proven effective at quickly increasing these levels.

In addition to assisting the “ticker,” exercise enthusiasts appreciate its ability to limber up stiff muscles. It helps to increase endurance and improve recovery time after strenuous workouts, as it feeds the muscles during training. Intense activity depletes muscle cells of ATP as well as the ATP precursors made from ribose. Ribose supplementation can help restore normal levels of these components more quickly. After taking D-Ribose, it's absorbed into the small intestine and then distributed to various networks of the body including cardiac and skeletal muscles, energizing the cells.

Our Swanson Ultra 100% Pure Ribose mixes easily with liquids. It, like all supplemental ribose, is produced from the fermentation of corn syrup. Although it is a sugar, it has a negative glycemic index, so it will not increase the GI of your favorite juice. Nearly every person at some time in their life has fundamental needs to increase energy storage. One scoop of our product, which can be taken up to four times per day, will help you get this vital component you and your cells may be missing!
