How Does Heat Affect the Integrity of a Probiotic Supplement?

Question: Swanson ProBiotic-4 sounds just like the supplement I want. But I'm concerned that it won't survive the delivery from your door to mine because of the summer heat. I doubt it will be kept below 72 degrees F in the truck!

I certainly understand your concern about how the heat may affect Swanson ProBiotic-4, as the live cultures contained in this supplement are particularly susceptible to deterioration from this element. Keep in mind that probiotic supplements are subject to higher than average temperatures several times during their way from the raw materials supplier to your door, and therefore, they are packaged in such a way to preserve as much of the original potency as possible. One of the main reasons why top-quality probiotic supplements include BILLIONS of organisms (at the time of manufacture) is the fact that some are going to die off during transit. But enough activity remains to benefit your health.

Speaking to that point, we received an interesting letter from a customer this month who tests the live activity of all her probiotic supplements by attempting to make yogurt from them. And guess what? She happily stated that Swanson ProBiotic-4 made a batch of yogurt at room temperature, and she was very pleased with it!

If you're still not convinced, you may want to try a product like item Garden of Life Primal Defense. This supplement is not a true lactobacillus supplement, but rather it provides HSOs (Homeostatic Soil Organisms), which also have a probiotic action on the body. The real advantage to this supplement is the potency is not affected by heat. Instead, the HSOs lie dormant until they are activated in body fluids.
