Give your body it's daily supply of "the sunshine vitamin" rain or shine with Vitamin D Complex. One of the most fundamental nutrients in human nutrition is also one in which we are commonly deficient. Vitamin D deficiency is common in all age groups, with children, pregnant and nursing women, obese people and darker-skinned people especially at risk. These nearly epidemic levels of vitamin D deficiency have wide-ranging health implications, as the nutrient is involved in processes throughout the body, from bone mineralization to cardiovascular function. Vitamin D is known as "the sunshine vitamin" because the skin produces it when exposed to the sun's UVB rays, but many of us don't get the sun exposure required to produce all of the vitamin D we need. This is especially problematic during the winter months and for people who live at northern latitudes where direct sun exposure is limited. Even people who spend a lot of time in the sun may find their vitamin D production lacking, as the same sunscreen that protects the skin from the sun's UV rays also inhibits the skin's ability to use that sunlight to synthesize vitamin D, reducing production by as much as 95%. That's why for so many of us, a good vitamin D supplement is absolutely essential—but which form of the vitamin is best? Scientists are still disputing that question, but with our Vitamin D Complex you don't have to choose. Each capsule delivers 1,000 IU of both vitamin D-2 and D-3 to ensure that your body gets all the D it needs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Product I can tell you that I work in doors all day, and at night so I don't get a lot of sun. This is one of the only products on the market I have seen like this that offers D-2 and D-3 in the same formulation, the only other time I have seen D-2 in formulation is when a doctor prescribes it for patients with severe vitamin D deficiency. From my own experience I had been on this product for several months, and I asked my doctor to check my vitamin D levels. I work in the medical field and have seen so many patients pop up low on their vitamin D levels its scary. My doctor told me that generally all of us that work in doors are generally low on vitamin D. I told her I wanted her to check it anyways because I wanted to know how effective my supplementation regiment has been. I got it checked and to my surprise I was within normal range. I would recommend this product especially for indoor workers who don't get a lot of sun, because even with just taking the D-3 supplements they still have to be photo-activated by sunlight exposure and with the D-2 it doesn't need to be. This product attacks the vitamin D supplementation from both ends and gives you a great bang for your buck.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from D2 is not good for humans Find more information about vitamin D2 compared to D3. D2 is "vegetable" vitamin D while D3 is "animal/human" version. D2 is not as effective as D3 and it can even block D3 from working. Human skin produces D3 from the sun.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great value Knowing that both D's are covered in this supplement is something I like. Price and quality are very good.

Q: Why are some vitamin D products measured in IU while others are in mcg?

Due to changes in FDA labeling guidelines, vitamin D amounts must now be listed in micrograms (mcg) on supplement facts and nutrition labels instead of international units (IU). Although these new guidelines were issued in 2016, updates weren't required until June 2020.

At Swanson, we began updating our labels in early 2017. You will see a mixture of both IU and mcg as our national brand partners complete this process.

Q: Did my vitamin D supplement change?

A: You may have noticed a change in the daily value percentage on your favorite vitamin D product, but that doesn't mean your product changed. The FDA increased the recommended daily intake (RDA) of vitamin D, which means the same product with the same ingredient amounts fulfills a lower percentage of the RDA than it prior to the change.

Q: How much vitamin D do I need each day?

In 2016, the Food and Nutrition Board increased the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of vitamin D for most adults from 10 mcg (400 IU) to 15 mcg (600 IU) per day, and 20 mcg (800 IU) for ages 70+.

Some doctors and nutritionists recommend higher daily vitamin D intakes, especially for those at risk for having low levels. The Vitamin D Council, an organization dedicated to raising awareness about vitamin D, recommends average adults supplement with 125 mcg (5,000 IU) of vitamin D daily. Talk with your doctor about your individual needs.
