Herbalicious! One of the best pea snacks around.
I’ve tried several varieties of pea snacks (including Calbee’s Snapea Crisps and Trader Joe’s Inner Peas) and Peas Please is my favorite brand so far. I think they are also the best I’ve found so far in terms of social and environmental impact – hence the 5/5 “green stars” – more on that later. The veggie-herb flavor comes from a mix of dried veggies like red bell pepper, tomato, onion and garlic, and also herbs, dill and parsley. The dill is not too strong and the flavor is well-balanced, so they are ideal if you’re looking for something a little more flavorful than regular salted pea snacks. The main ingredients are organically grown green peas and brown rice, providing good sources of protein (5g per ounce), fiber (16% RDA) and iron (15% RDA), while being low in fat because they are baked. Not surprisingly, I ate the entire 3.3 ounce bag in one go, so that ended up providing half of my daily fiber and iron requirement, and about a third of my protein (an adult only needs around 50 grams of protein per day – many of us eat too much protein). They are also gluten-free. So, overall, thumbs up for Peas Please! As far as social and environmental impact I think they are in the top 20% of their category, whether you count them as a snack or a protein source, so they deserve 5/5 green stars. The main thing that can be improved is the packaging – I would prefer if it was a compostable bag (which is rare, alas). The ingredients are all organic and the company (Peeled Snacks) works with farmers to encourage other improvements towards sustainability such as on-site solar panels or a biogas facility for energy conservation. They are a certified B-Corporation, and you can see their scores and company highlights on the bcorporation website (for example a living wage is paid to all employees, >50% of employees are women, >30% of suppliers are in low-income communities, 1% of sales go to charity, and 100% of products are organic). In a broader sense, peas are a good sustainable source of protein. They are classified as pulses (part of the legume family) – these plants fix their own nitrogen and therefore have much lower fertilizer needs. Nitrogen fertilizer is generally made from natural gas (or even coal) and accounts for around 40% of the greenhouse gas emissions associated with agriculture. Besides saving energy and CO2, peas can also enhance the soil by adding nitrogen and other nutrients, making them a good rotation crop. The UN declared 2016 the year of the pulse to draw attention to these foods as more sustainable protein sources.

For a snack food, this has got great protein and fiber, and I like the taste. I'm so glad I found these in organic as I quit the non organic ones becasue of all the bad stuff in them. I'm glad I found a good price for these and will buy more! Now I don't feel guilty offering these organic ones to my mom...she love them.
