DOES NOT WORK WITH HARD WATER! I had high hopes for this bar shampoo after reading so many outstanding reviews and really wanted a great alternative to the usual detergent shampoos, but unfortunately this type of product does not work at all in hard water areas like I live in (all the castile soaps are the same way). First off, it did not lather AT ALL as promised, it felt very dirty and greasy going through my hair, and it left my hair with a filmy, waxy-feeling coating on it and encouraged frizz to form. The filmy, waxy coating also was left on my hands, shoulders and any other body part the soap residue touched, as well as a horrendous case of bad soap scum all over the shower wall, shower curtain and floor of the tub. After such bad hair results right at the start, I subsequently tried the apple cider vinegar rinse tip, and it did help improve the frizzies a little and helped the hair to not feel as straw-like while wet, but it only helped the hair in a minor way, and all of the other problems mentioned still remained. (And my hair still looked back after it dried.) We gave this a try for a small while and nothing changed, so I'm returning it and won't try to purchase any of these types of saponified soap products again. I sure do wish it would work for us with our hard water the way it works for others who don't have hard water!

Rated 4 out of 5 by kjsdil Nice alternative to liquid shampoo
I wasn't sure how this bar shampoo would leave my hair. I had used another brand of bar shampoo in the past, and it left my hair like straw. J.R. Liggett's is very gentle and does a really good job of cleaning my hair gently. I gave it four leaves for value and convenience because the main drawback I see is that it tends to melt in the shower. I even have it in a closed soap dish with a plastic drain holder underneath the bar and it still gets quite soft so I am not sure how long it will last. Also, I find that I do need a conditioner afterward. Other than that, it's a good shampoo and would be great for travel.

Originally bought this bar shampoo for convenience when going on vacation (small and can't leak in luggage), but like it so much that I now use it all the time. And it's not necessary to use a conditioner with it either, so another plus!

I have been using J.R. Liggett's shampoo bar instead of a detergent based shampoo for over 3 years. I have oily hair that needed to be washed daily, but with the shampoo bar I can skip a day or even two between washings. No need for conditioner. Great for traveling.

I have used this on and off for years and have always found it to be a consistent and satisfactory product. It cleanses gently without over drying, very different form commercial shampoo. Very pleasant light scent and the bar lasts forever! No plastic bottle, no mysterious chemicals, what more could you ask for! Love it.

It may be called a "shampoo" bar, but I use it for bathing, too. It keeps my skin from drying out in the harsh winters. So simple to use the same bar for both bathing & shampooing. Lathers up great -- just rub it on your head.
And great for traveling. Takes up no room & you don't have to worry about it leaking out. Each bar doesn't look big, but sure lasts a long time.
I even managed to get my husband hooked on it. No more nasty shampoo ingredients for us -- you can identify & pronounce the few simple ingredients this product contains.

This leaves my hair clean & I don't think I use as much as I would the liquid type.

Rated 5 out of 5 by kentuckymom76 A little skeptical at first but...
I must say I was skeptical at first...I mean shampoo in a bar & no conditioner??!! I figured that I had nothing to lose b/c of Swanson's guarantee plus all the reviews were great everywhere I looked. I have been using other shampoos & conditioners that don't have sulfates, parabens, etc. for over a year now so I was already used to the "non lather" feel in my hair. This was still a little different feeling the first time I used it & I really didn't expect to be able to go without a conditioner (after all for over 35 yrs I have always used it). First time I used the bar, I loved it!! My hair is soft & shiny (I have thick, coarse hair & have never felt my hair this soft) that even my hairdresser noticed a difference...heck, even my husband noticed when he ran his hands through my hair & he didn't know I had changed to this bar shampoo...I am a believer now & looooooove it!!

This product worked well with my fine wavy long hair. It added thickness and volume and could be used with a conditioner. It didn't seem to strip the hair at all. The only negative I found is that it stung my sensitive skin a little so I would recommend washing hair separately from the body if you have super sensitive skin like me.

My husband loves this product. He finds it quick and easy to use. Long lasting and does not dry out his hair. He likes using a bar instead of having to deal with a bottle. It is a lot easier to get the right amount where you want it without wasting any.

I love this stuff. Started using non-liquid everything for travel several years ago to ease passage through security, found I really liked J.R. Liggett's whether traveling or not. So I was delighted to find that my favorite vendor - Swanson - had added it to their shelves. At the best price I've seen anywhere. Great stuff. Unscented, clean-smelling, RICH lather, and lasts a very long time. Thanks Mr. Swanson!
