How Can Glutathione—The "Master Antioxidant"—Fight Fatigue & Boost Your Immune Function?

Lee Swanson, President of Swanson Health Products

Lee Swanson

Dear Friends and Valued Customers:

Dr. Stephen Langer, a practicing physician in Berkeley, CA, achieved nationwide recognition in the early 1990s with the publication of his best-selling book Solved: The Riddle of Illness, which has sold over 150,000 copies worldwide and is considered the authoritative text on natural thyroid health.

Stephen Langer, M.D., Swanson advisory board

Stephen Langer, M.D.

Dr. Langer became interested in glutathione-boosting supplementation after attending a professional meeting on the subject and learning more about this master antioxidant and detoxifier. Now he's created the Dr. Stephen Langer Glutathione Boosting Program, featuring Setria® Glutathione and Certified Organic Undenatured Bioactive Whey Protein. In this exclusive interview, he explains why he's so excited about Glutathione and how the two supplements in his Glutathione Boosting Program can protect your health and improve your quality of life.

As always, I wish you the best of health,

SWANSON: Dr. Langer, why have you become so interested in Glutathione?

DR. LANGER: Well, Lee, Glutathione is nothing new. Medical science has been aware of the importance of Glutathione for decades. But until recently, most physicians believed that oral Glutathione was not effective and supplementing the key building blocks—protein, key amino acids and cofactors—was impractical.

Recently, a group of experts has been working to change this perception and prove that we can, in fact, dramatically influence our Glutathione levels through intelligent supplementation. For instance, Kyowa Hakko, one of the world's largest producers of pharmaceutical-grade amino acids, has new research showing that oral Glutathione can, in fact, markedly elevate Glutathione levels in the body. And there's been a lot of work done that suggests quality protein supplementation helps, too. This is exciting to me as a professional physician because we've known all along how important Glutathione is. If we can boost our Glutathione levels through supplementation, we can impact our lives in a really profound way.

SWANSON: What does Glutathione do for us?

DR. LANGER: Glutathione is the body's most important intracellular antioxidant. It works inside the cells, quenching the free radicals that are formed through normal cellular processes. Glutathione is present in every cell in the body and in all bodily fluids. Without it, we would be quickly overcome by free radicals.

Not only is Glutathione a potent antioxidant; it also helps maintain the activity of other crucial antioxidants like vitamins C and E. When these antioxidants have done their job, Glutathione helps reactivate them so they can keep working.

In addition to its antioxidant properties, Glutathione is a master detoxifier. It's particularly important within the organs responsible for cleansing our bodies, especially the liver and kidneys, but also the lungs and the intestines. Here it works by helping to detoxify and break down the chemicals and pollutants that we ingest or inhale, or those that are produced within our bodies. Elevating Glutathione levels is one of the best ways to support our natural detoxifying processes.

Glutathione is also important to the immune system. It's essential to the production and replication of white blood cells known as lymphocytes, and it's particularly vital to the activity of specific lymphocytes called "natural killer" or NK cells.

SWANSON: We tend to think antioxidants just keep us healthy and defend us, but you believe Glutathione actually has a direct impact on how we feel day-to-day.

DR. LANGER: Absolutely. Low Glutathione levels are found in almost everyone who struggles with fatigue, low mood and energy. And if you're facing any kind of health challenge, being low on Glutathione is going to interfere with your ability to remain strong and regain or maintain wellness. Glutathione defends us, keeps our detoxifying organs and systems functioning optimally and helps us keep lean and fit to face the demands of daily life.

SWANSON: What is Glutathione and how do we get it?

DR. LANGER: Glutathione is a tripeptide—a combination of three amino acidsin this case: glutamate, cysteine and glycine. It's a natural compound that is both ingested and produced in the body. But it's very difficult to get from food. Dietary Glutathione comes mostly from freshly prepared meats and fresh fruits and vegetables. However, even the most minimal processing destroys Glutathione, so any diet high in processed foods and low in fresh foods is likely going to be low in Glutathione. Processed protein supplements don't help, either.

That's why my Certified Organic Undenatured Bioactive Whey Protein features pure, certified organic undenatured whey protein. That's what the body needs to make Glutathione. I truly believe that certified organic undenatured whey protein is one of the world's most perfect foods. By giving us what we need for peak Glutathione production, it can help us fight fatigue, boost energy, maintain healthy weight and greatly improve health on all levels.

SWANSON: If Glutathione is so important, why not just take Glutathione itself and be done with it?

Glutathione chart

DR. LANGER: That's a good question. While we now know that Glutathione supplements can be effective, I'm a firm believer in supporting the body's potential to produce its own health-enhancing substances by providing it with the proper building blocks. The body is a complex intelligent machine. It's not just the substances it produces that matter; it's equally important to support the processes and functions that build these substances. That's what we're doing here. My Certified Organic Undenatured Bioactive Whey Protein and my Glutathione Precursor Complex give the body both Glutathione itself and the building blocks it needs to make its own in the exact quantities it needs when it needs it for optimal health and wellness.

SWANSON: I've heard Glutathione called "the morning antioxidant." Why is that?

DR. LANGER: Studies show that Glutathione levels are at their lowest in the morning. People call it "the morning antioxidant" because if we supplement to support our Glutathione levels in the morning, at their lowest point, we're setting ourselves up for a healthier, more vibrant day.

SWANSON: You mentioned that our ability to produce Glutathione declines with age.

DR. LANGER: Absolutely. When you combine a lack of dietary Glutathione with a reduced ability to generate Glutathione internally, it's no surprise that we see much lower levels in older populations, and it's easy to see why supplementation can be so beneficial. There are over 85,000 published studies on Glutathione, and the research shows that levels begin to wane around the mid 40s. After we reach age 60, we see rapid and dramatic declines in Glutathione levels.

SWANSON: If we know so much about Glutathione, and it's so important to our health, why hasn't it received the same attention as, say, vitamin C?

DR. LANGER: As I said earlier, the argument has always been that Glutathione breaks down and/or is destroyed in the GI tract, rendering it useless. But those beliefs were based on old studies that lacked the sophisticated methods and technologies available today or simply didn't look at the right parameters. The latest research disproves the old ideas.

Evidence now suggests that oral Glutathione enters the body in three ways: it can be absorbed intact in the intestines and taken up by tissues; it can be broken down in the GI tract to its constituent amino acids, which are then absorbed and resynthesized in tissues; and finally, it can be taken up directly into GI tissues by cells that line the GI tract. Evidence also suggests that high-quality, whole, undenatured whey protein and the right individual constituents can give the body what it needs to continue making its own Glutathione even in advanced age.

SWANSON: Your Glutathione Boosting Program really is "smart supplemention"—it combines pure Glutathione with the key building blocks the body needs to make its own.

DR. LANGER: That's exactly what we were trying to achieve—a complete, daily Glutathione solution. My program starts with Certified Organic Undenatured Bioactive Whey Protein, a pure, 100 percent Certified Organic undenatured whey protein from hormone free, grass-fed cows reared on pristine pastures in Wisconsin. It's the highest-quality organic protein I could find, and it's just what the body needs to optimize Glutathione production.

My Glutathione Precursor Complex includes the three amino acids that make up Glutathione, along with supporting nutrients for optimum absorption and utilization:

  • Setria® Glutathione: body-ready Glutathione in its reduced form for optimum bioavailability.
  • Pure Amino Acids (L-Glutamine, L-Cysteine): We use only the best pharmaceutical-grade aminos. They are AjiPure® brand ingredients from Ajinomoto, one of the world's leading all-natural amino acid producers.
  • TMG (tri-methyl-glycine): TMG provides additional glycine needed for glutathione synthesis. It's also a powerful methyl donor, and research indicates that it aids in the uptake of Glutathione within the liver.
  • Vitamin C: There's evidence that vitamin C helps boost Glutathione in red blood cells.
  • Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA): Evidence suggests ALA helps regenerate Glutathione's antioxidant potential.
I specifically chose the advanced R-fraction ALA, which is up to 10 times more effective than conventional ALA.
  • Standardized Milk Thistle (80% Silymarin): Silymarin from milk thistle is one of the most potent liver nourishers known to herbal science.
  • Acetyl L-Carnitine: Evidence suggests that this amino acid-derived compound aids in the uptake of Glutathione and may enhance its activity.

These two products—Certified Organic Undenatured Bioactive Whey Protein and Glutathione Precursor Complex—form my complete Glutathione Boosting Program.

As you mentioned, Glutathione is sometimes called "the morning antioxidant." The idea here is that when you wake up, your body has the lowest Glutathione levels it will have all day. So you take one of my Glutathione Precursor Complex capsules when you wake up for an immediate boost. Later, with breakfast, you enjoy a glass of Certified Organic Undenatured Bioactive Whey Protein blended to your taste and you give your body what it needs to keep producing Glutathione throughout the day. In the evening, you take another capsule of my Glutathione Precursor Complex. This way you're ensuring optimal Glutathione levels at every stage of your day.

SWANSON: The Glutathione featured in your Glutathione Precursor Complex is different than others. What makes it better?

DR. LANGER: It's called Setria,® an advanced form of reduced Glutathione produced by Kyowa Hakko, another one of the world's largest producers of pharmaceutical-grade amino acids.

Setria is different because it is in "reduced form," which simply means that it is in a form your body will recognize. It's also different because it is 100 percent pure and produced through a natural fermentation process using a natural non-animal medium. Many amino acid products on the market are derived from animal products or are synthetically produced, so these are important points of differentiation. The other amino acids in the formula—the AjiPure® Aminos—are also non-animal-source products.

SWANSON: Your Certified Organic Undenatured Bioactive Whey Protein also differs from other undenatured protein products. How?

DR. LANGER: There are many undenatured protein powders on the market, many of which carry incredibly high prices, (up to $100 for a one-month supply), but when you really look at them, you see they are not certified organic and they are not made from fresh whey collected from grass-fed, hormone free cows—these are important distinctions. My Certified Organic Undenatured Bioactive Whey Protein is minimally processed at low temperatures to preserve the critical components—the proteins, lactoferrin and immunoglobulins—so it needs to be pure from the start. And it is. I don't know of any other undenatured whey protein powder that starts with pure, certified organic whey.

SWANSON: Finally, Dr. Langer, who should consider taking these products? Are they for everyone, or just older people?

DR. LANGER: Absolutely everyone, especially those over 45 and certainly those over 60, should consider my Glutathione Boosting Program. Glutathione is critical, and none of us is immune to the natural declines that come with age. But even younger people should consider using my Certified Organic Undenatured Bioactive Whey Protein with or without my Glutathione Precursor Complex, especially if their stressful lifestyles increase their biological needs.

Smokers and drinkers should be supporting their Glutathione levels, as these substances are toxins and Glutathione is used up in neutralizing and eliminating them. Many prescription drugs can deplete Glutathione as well. Coffee and tea also contain compounds that destroy Glutathione, so if you're a big Starbucks fan, it might be a good idea to supplement.

SWANSON: Dr. Langer, thank you for bringing this to our attention and for helping us to develop these products. I think you're really on to something here that can be a real game changer.

DR. LANGER: Thank you, Lee. I am absolutely certain that those who use my Glutathione Boosting Program will find that they feel better and are better able to face life's daily challenges with positive energy and optimal physical fitness.
