I have always believed that it’s essential to take a holistic approach to maintaining good health. That’s not just my personal opinion; science has shown us again and again that our lifestyle choices—proper nutrition, regular physical activity and even our social interactions—can have a major impact on the health of mind and body. And perhaps nowhere is this more evident than with the heart and cardiovascular system.

The importance of regular exercise for maintaining a healthy heart is well established, as is the value of adequate vitamin intake and regular fiber consumption. But a growing body of scientific evidence indicates there are other nutritional factors—such as antioxidant polyphenols, flavonoids, flavonoid glycosides and other naturally occurring compounds—that can also have a significant impact on our circulatory health. Research indicates that’s the case with Cordiart, the pharmaceutical-grade rutinoside extract in our new EndoPro™ Endothelial Support Formula.

Endothelial Function: A Vital Factor for Cardiovascular Wellness

When we talk about cardiovascular health, we tend to focus on the heart. That’s understandable; it’s the main organ that powers the whole system, and the part that we can feel and even hear working with the aid of a stethoscope. But the health of your heart depends very much upon the condition of your blood vessels. Healthy blood vessels have the ability to expand (vasodilation) and contract (vasoconstriction) in response to changes in blood flow, minimizing the burden on the heart.

One of the most important factors in blood vessel health is the function of the endothelium, the thin layer of cells that lines the interior surface of the entire circulatory system—from the heart, to the major arteries, down to the smallest capillaries. The endothelium acts as a semiselective barrier, controlling the passage of materials into and out of the bloodstream. It also plays an important role in organ repair and the formation of new blood vessels.

Proper Endothelial Function Depends on Readily Available Nitric Oxide

Healthy endothelial function is directly dependent on the availability of a compound known as nitric oxide (NO), a powerful vasodilator and an important cellular-signaling molecule involved in many physiological processes throughout the body. In fact, the journal Science proclaimed NO “Molecule of the Year” in 1992, in recognition of its fundamental roles in neuroscience, physiology and immunology. And in 1998, three U.S. scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries concerning the role of NO as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system.

The endothelium uses NO to signal the surrounding smooth muscle tissues of the blood vessels to relax, dilating the vessels to facilitate blood flow. In fact, NO is also known as “endothelium-derived relaxing factor” (or EDRF) in light of this role. NO has a very short half-life in the bloodstream—lasting just a few seconds—so the body needs to resupply it continuously. Our bodies are able to manufacture NO from the amino acid L-arginine, oxygen and NADPH with the help of enzymes known as endothelial nitric oxide synthases (eNOS), but the activity of these enzymes declines as we grow older, leaving us with suboptimal NO production. Fortunately, with the right nutrients, we can help our bodies produce the NO we need to maintain optimal cardiovascular wellness.

Cordiart™ Activates Endothelial Nitric Oxide Production

Our new Swanson Ultra® EndoPro™ Endothelial Support Formula features Cordiart, a pharmaceutical-grade, purified flavonoid glycoside extracted from sweet orange peels that activates NO production by the endothelium, which in turn sends a signal to the smooth muscles to relax, inducing vasodilation to support healthy circulation. To be more precise, Cordiart stimulates eNOS activity, helping to restore endogenous NO production. This is an important distinction because it’s more than just a temporary increase in NO levels like you get with other NO-boosting supplements, such as L-arginine. By supporting natural endothelial function, Cordiart enables blood vessels to dilate on demand, whenever your level of physical exertion requires an increase in blood flow.

Purified, High-Potency Extract Delivers Outstanding Bioavailability

Cordiart is a highly purified flavonoid glycoside extract with a remarkable 90% minimum rutinoside content. That’s an incredibly potent extract; but what’s equally, if not more impressive than the potency, is its outstanding bioavailability. In a cross-over study involving ten healthy subjects who received 500 mg of Cordiart or 500 mg of a generic rutinoside extract on separate days, Cordiart showed 50% higher bioavailability compared to the generic rutinoside, as well as a much more rapid absorption rate.

With unprecedented potency and bioavailability and clinically demonstrated efficacy, EndoPro Endothelial Support Formula with Cordiart gives you a safe, effective way to promote your body’s natural nitric oxide production and optimize endothelial function. This makes it an excellent supplement for daily cardiovascular maintenance and for promoting healthy circulation throughout the body.
