Daily Health Tips update for July 2:

It was Franklin P. Adams who said, “Health is the thing that makes you feel that now is the best time of the year.” Of course there are lots of ways to stay healthy, but these eight fun fitness facts can help you improve your daily living or just pique your health interest.

  1. Did you know that actively playing with your kids or grandkids can burn as many calories as a brisk walk?
  1. If you are unable to carry on a comfortable conversation when you’re working out, you might be overdoing it. Slow down a bit and you might actually end up maximizing your workout.
  1. Raising your activity level, even just a small amount, could lower your blood pressure 4 to 9 mm Hg. That’s the same reduction in blood pressure that certain prescription antihypertensive medications provide.
  1. For every hour of exercise you do, you could live two hours longer, even if you don’t start working out until you are middle aged!
  1. After turning 30, we lose about one pound of lean muscle mass each year. To combat this, lift weights 2-3 times per week. It will help prevent those shrinking muscles from turning to fat.
  1. To burn the most fat, target your large muscle groups like those in the rear end, thigh and chest regions. Your whole body will benefit.
  1. There’s a new fad of yoga called Doga, where you practice yoga with your canine counterpart! It’s catching on in major cities and consists of classic yoga poses to help you and your pooch align chakras.
  1. The oldest person to even finish a full-length marathon was 100 years old! Fauja Singh finished the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in October of 2011. He was born on a farm in India in 1911 and didn’t start training until the age of 89, when he lost his wife and son.
