Omega Oils & Optimal Health

Omegas 3, 5, 6, 7 and 9 belong to a group of fatty acids often referred to as "good fats." The benefits of these fats are numerous - they serve to nourish brain, heart, eye, and kidney tissues.* They have been shown to benefit immune system and digestive system health in addition to supporting healthy metabolism and a positive mood.*

Omega-3 fatty acids (such as EPA & DHA) are particularly noteworthy because the typical "factory farmed" and highly processed Western diet underdelivers these vital good fats. Today, the best sources of these fats are wild, cold-water fish such as salmon (not farmed fish). Grass-fed meat is another option, but unfortunately, most livestock is now fattened on corn. These farmed foods can distort the natural balance of omega fatty acids in our diets, increasing levels of Omega-6 arachidonic acid.

While our ancestors ate a ratio of dietary Omega-3 to Omega-6 of roughly 1:1, our Western diet (with high intakes of red meat, sugar, and refined carbo-hydrates) skews this ratio to as high as 20:1.

Whole vs. "Purified"

At New Chapter®, we firmly believe that when it comes to nutrition, Nature got it "right" the first time. The whole fish oil in Wholemega® contains Nature's optimal balance of 16 omegas, not just several. It is a natural source of highly beneficial nutrients like vitamin D3, and powerful antioxidants like Astaxanthin. This is Nature's design for health.

"Purified" fish oil manufacturers take a different approach. Because they often source many different types of fish stocks with varying levels of beneficial omegas, and ship these catches over long distances from various fisheries before processing, they need to employ complex, high-heat purification processes to deliver an acceptable product.

This extensive processing can break down the beneficial compounds in their fish oil. While some manufacturers then attempt to add back specific omegas, vitamins, or antioxidants, the benefits of the "whole" are lost forever.

The Difference is Clear

The dull, yellow hue and watery texture of conventional fish oil capsules is symbolic of "purified" products. This heavy distillation (which can be necessary to remove contaminants) can fractionate, isolate, and destroy beneficial compounds that give fish oil its naturally vibrant color and clarity. Wholemega, however, delivers an oil that is striking in color and transparency. The brilliant hue in Wholemega comes from Astaxanthin - an extremely powerful antioxidant that is naturally found in wild salmon and abundant in this extra virgin fish oil.

The gentle process used to extract Wholemega preserves this antioxidant as well as numerous other beneficial compounds, including vitamin D3. In fact, this whole oil is delivered from a government inspected FOOD GRADE facility.

Effectiveness

For optimal benefit, fish oil must become incorporated into cell membranes where it serves to modulate cell signal events and increases membrane fluidity.* As demonstrated in a human clinical trial, Wholemega® has been shown to incorporate into peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) - allowing fish oil to provide its beneficial effects (see chart at bottom of page).

Additionally, Wholemega has been shown to down-regulate arachidonic acid (AA); helping to restore the natural balance of Omega-3 to Omega-6 fatty acids.*

A human clinical study (see chart) demonstrates the change of Omega-3 fatty acid content (EPA & DHA) in cell membranes (PBMC) after consuming Wholemega:

Supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. One serving of Wholemega provides a combined 400 mg of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids.
