100% Certified Organic Carob Powder, Raw
I can't believe it's not chocolate!
This is a lengthy review, so for those who want a short answer, yes, I think this is an excellent organic product that is priced affordably and it makes a good substitute for chocolate, but closer to dark chocolate. Be warned, it can be an acquired taste. There you go. Thanks for reading my review!
I am pleasantly surprised at how much I like this carob powder. Let me first start by saying that I am an individual who cannot normally consume chocolate, because of the caffeine normally present in it. (That means no regular coffee or green tea too.) :(
I used to envy when my wife or my family when they would get a chocolate bar from the store, or if it was say, Valentines day, and chocolate is just about everywhere, and they would eat this delicious confectionary treat, sometimes right in front of me at the dinner table. Well, I no longer feel left out!
When I came across this carob powder on the Swanson site, I became intrigued, and after reading about that it could be a kind of substitute for chocolate, and NO CAFFEINE, I was sold.
How I used this powder was by first finding a recipe online for carob, and what I made looked like brownie dough. Sure, I probably could've waited for it to solidify in the fridge, but I was impatient, and I haven't eaten true chocolate in some time.
What I made it with after some trial and error is just 3 ingredients: carob powder, butter that had been simmered in a pot until hot, and raw organic honey. All I did was heat up the oil, put the carob powder and raw honey in a heat-proof bowl, the mixed in the hot oil until the mixture looked like brownie dough. The online recipe called for 2 parts hot oil, like 2 tablespoons, and 3 parts carob powder which was like 3 tablespoons. I added to that recipe with about a tablespoon of raw honey.
How did it taste? I liked it. I will say that it can be somewhat of an acquired taste, a little bitter, more like kind of dark chocolate; so if you were hoping this tasted like milk chocolate, you might wind-up being disappointed. It did however satisfy my craving for chocolate.
The price for this stuff is great, because there is a lot of carob powder in the jar, a whole pound, and it's organic to boot. Also, there is conveniently a little plastic scoop in the jar. There is no measurement on the scoop, it looks like somewhere between a tablespoon and a teaspoon, but the label states that 1 scoop is 5 grams, or 5,0000 milligrams.
Another thing I noticed is the carob powder is ground very fine, which I like, because I believe it mixes better into things, like for recipes in cooking.
Final thoughts: If you want a substitute for chocolate, this is a possible replacement for it; but be warned, this carob powder may not be to your liking if you don't like dark chocolate.

I CAN ONLY SAY "WOW"
I've always been skeptical about carob. Once I tried a famous brand and I hated it, now I wanted to give it a try with this brand and the flavor is even better than sweetened cocoa. This carob powder is delicious by itself, sweet, mild flavor. I mix 1 tbsp with coconut or almond milk, a pinch of cinnamon, agave nectar and voila! one of the best shakes you can have.

An aquired taste.
I like the taste although I have had a negative reaction from my girlfriend. Oh well. More for me! It has a natural sweetness so there's no need to ad anything. I like to ad it to some almond milk before I go to bed.

great product except...
This carob has a malt like flavor and I love it for its' nutritional value and its' my night time chocolate choice. The product is an excellent price, aside from the exp.date of 3/14(product received in mid Dec.) that is why I rated w/ a few 3 leaves. As a consumer I make choices to stock up my pantry or in this case ice box via sales or especially buy1 get 1 free items.I really wish there was a code on items or a page we could go to give us the knowledge before buying in bulk. I am sure many others would appreciate the added assurance as well.I know we can still use several mths past expiration on certain products but considering I that have several other swanson purchased organic cacoa nib products to consume as well, knowing expirations beforehand would be extremely helpful. Perhaps this could be frozen to prolong its' efficacy if so label doesn't say so

Best Chocolate Substitute
This great product can be substituted for cocoa in any recipe. I've made delicious cookies and like hot chocolate with stevia. Organic Carob is the way to go.

Impressed with this product
I purchased a similar high quality product at a natural food store and paid more than double what I paid with Swanson. The quality, flavor, results are the same. I was very impressed with the quality.

great substitute for cocoa in my hot soy beverage
Recently I have substituted carob powder for cocoa powder in my daily hot drink due to the fact that carob powder is caffeine free. I dissolve a teaspoon in a tiny bit of hot water and add cinnamon powder and sometimes cloves powder. Afterwards I add organic soy milk and after warming in the microwave I add raw honey. I add the cinnamon and cloves since I don't care for the taste of carob powder. Try my recipe, it's delicious. I love that this carob powder is raw and not roasted. The less processed a food item is the better.

Organic Carob Powder
This is a very good product. Tastes way better than the other toasted carob powder, but neither mixes very well and I found myself smashing the bubbles of unblended carob powder against my coffee cup. ..this organic carob tastes sweeter to me also.

Great Raw Carob!
Raw organic carob can at times be difficult to find at the local health food store and if the local health food store has raw organic carob, they usually charge much more for it. Other sites that sell raw carob usually charge more for it as well. The taste of Swanson's raw organic carob is as good as any other expensive carob that I have bought.

not even close
This is my first time trying carob, because we love chocolate and trying to replace it with a healthier option. When I opened the jar, it smelled terrible, kind of yeasty, bad cheese smell. I made brownies with it regardless. Well even the sweeteners did not disguise the off flavor. I don't know if it's just a bad batch or this is what it supposed to smell and taste like. Not even close to chocolate.

use it in organic coffee in the morning mixed with either organic, non-instant nonfat dry milk powder or hemp milk. It has that unique taste to it.
