Good Quality Steel...poor design I purchased one of these & when it arrived. It would not open...completely stuck, I tried rubber gloves, pliers, freezing it...etc..nothing worked. So I called swansons & they were great. They sent me a replacement right away. the second one opened with ease & does work well. The quality & gauge of the metal is good. Then during one of the times I was using it as I screwed it closed I noticed it felt like it went offline. When I tried to screw it open it was stuck. Since I stopped as soon as I noticed it felt off...with some might I was able to open it. It then occurred to me that maybe that is what happened with the first one...so I went back & checked the closure line & sure enough it was off...So that's why it was stuck. The threading going offline when screwing it together can happen very easily...so as long as you carefully & mindfully close it you are ok...and it will steep a nice cup of tea it just too much effort for me when I am just trying to have a cup of tea to have to take the time to position & reposition the ends to thread correctly & not get stuck. Very Useful Once Open I took a chance and ordered this item since the review before I ordered said it was impossible to open. When I first received this item I could not open it at all. After giving it a gentle tap with a hammer a few times it opened and I realized it is a twist off cap and as long as I gently open and close it this tool works GREAT for loose leaf teas!!! Ball gets stuck The ball gets stuck and becomes nearly impossible to open sometimes. It's an absolute pain to use. The chain broke. I'm thinking of just trashing the thing. It's garbage. November 21, 2011
