Vitamin E Decreases Risk of Cardiac-Related Mortality In Women

September 2005

Vitamin E decreased the risk of cardiovascular disease-related death among healthy women in the Women’s Health Trial, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Researchers conducted the study between 1992 and 2004 on 39,876 seemingly healthy U.S. women aged 45 years or older. Study participants received either 600 IU of vitamin E or placebo and aspirin or placebo on alternate days.

The researchers recorded 482 major cardiovascular events in the vitamin E group and 517 in the placebo group, representing a seven percent reduction in the risk of major cardiovascular events among those supplementing with vitamin E. However, there was a significant 24% reduction in cardiovascular death among individuals supplementing with vitamin E.
