Trying to Lose Weight? Eat At Home More Often

October 2004

If you’re trying to lose weight, you may do better if you ate at home more often rather than dining out. According to an article in the medical journal Obesity Research, eating frequently in restaurants is one of the behaviors associated with obesity, and portion size appears to be the factor to blame. In a study of 180 adult customers eating in a cafeteria-style restaurant, a 129-gram increase in the portion size of one pasta entrĂˆe resulted in a 25% increase in the caloric intake for the entire meal. According to the study authors, "these results support the suggestion that large restaurant portions may be contributing to the obesity epidemic."
