HFCS Pushes Obesity

Some nutrition researchers believe that the epidemic of obesity in the U.S. may be due in part to increased consumption of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), a sweetener used in a variety of soft drinks. An analysis of food consumption data compiled by the USDA shows a 1,000% increase in HFCS consumption from 1970 to 1990, far exceeding changes in intake of any other food group. The increased use of HFCS in the U.S. corresponds with a rapid increase in obesity.
