Calcium Helps Control Fat in Men and Some Women

January 2004

A recent study reveals that a high intake of calcium may help regulate body weight in men and in some women.

Data on the association between calcium intake and weight were gathered from 362 men and 462 women participating in the HERITAGE Family Study. Researchers studied the average calcium intake of subjects who were then divided into groups according to energy-adjusted calcium intake. Their overall and abdominal fat was checked against their calcium intake.

Body mass index, percentage of body fat, the sum of 8-skinfold thickness, computerized tomography of total abdominal fat, visceral fat, and abdominal subcutaneous fat as well as waist circumferences were all measured. Analyses were performed to see if there were correlations between calcium intakes and amounts of fat in each subject.

Researchers found that black and white men and white women who regularly consumed high amounts of calcium tended to be leaner than those who consumed less of the mineral. However, black women appeared to be unaffected by an increased calcium intake.
