A short-term diet high in calcium may provide support for individual weight-loss plans, according to the results of a study recently completed in Denmark. This trial supports several epidemiologic studies showing that greater calcium intake in obese adults on a low-calorie diet promoted healthy weight-loss better than a low-calcium intake. The randomized crossover study involved 10 moderately overweight subjects who consumed three different diets: low calcium (500 mg) and normal protein (15% of energy); high calcium (1,800 mg) and normal protein; and high calcium and high protein (23% of energy).
