Vitamin C Enhances the Absorption of Lutein

People who take lutein supplements to promote healthy vision may benefit greatly by adding a high-potency vitamin C supplement to their nutritional regimen. New research published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association indicates that high-dose vitamin C supplementation enhances the body’s absorption of lutein. In a study conducted on healthy men and women who were given 18 mg softgels of crystalline lutein alone or with 800 IU of vitamin E or 2,000 mg of vitamin C, subjects who were given lutein with vitamin C exhibited greater increases in serum lutein levels than the other test groups. These findings suggest that if you take a lutein supplement, combining it with vitamin C may help you get more eye protection for your money by helping your body absorb the lutein more efficiently.
