Stressed Out? Try L-lysine

November 2004

Research suggests that the amino acid L-lysine may play an important role in the body's response to stress. In a controlled trial, laboratory animals fed a L-lysine-deficient diet had significantly higher levels of stress-induced anxiety in two different stress/behavioral models, compared to animals fed a L-lysine-sufficient diet. The researchers conducting the study concluded that L-lysine deficiency interferes with the normal circadian release of serotonin, based on analysis of brain neurotransmitter levels in the test subjects.
