Lactium Milk Protein Ingredient Eases Stress Related Symptoms

March 2007

Daily supplementation with a unique milk protein hydrolysate effectively reduced stress-related symptoms in women, according to a study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The randomized, double-blind, crossover, placebo-controlled trial, led by researchers from the Catholic University of Korea, recruited 63 female volunteers with at least one stress-related disorder like anxiety, sleep problems and general fatigue.

The women were randomly assigned to receive either alphaS1-casein hydrolysate (150 mg/day Lactium) or placebo for 30 days. The participants then underwent a three-week washout period and then crossed over for a new 30-day period.

Stress-related symptoms were measured by self-reporting of the volunteers using a questionnaire that included 44 items quantifying the severity of each stress-related disorder on a scale of one to ten. Measures were taken at day 0, 15 and 30 of each intervention period.

After 30 days of the casein hydrolysate supplements, symptoms of stress were significantly reduced, especially those related to digestion, cardiovascular, emotional, intellectual and social problems, according to researchers.

"This study showed that a 30-day ingestion of alphaS1-casein hydrolysate decreased the stress-related symptoms in females suggesting that this product may be used as an effective functional ingredient alleviating such symptoms," researchers concluded.
