Why Choose Organic Cotton?

October 2008

Does it seem like everyone is jumping on the Organic bandwagon? Are you seeing “green” everywhere you go? To most businesses and consumers, this is a really good thing. Despite current economic woes, consumers continue to demand more eco-friendly products, and, therefore, create opportunities for companies to meet this need with their high quality products. Take, for example, an old staple of the US economy—cotton. Thanks to consumer demand for organic products, organic cotton fiber is available in personal care items (sanitary products, make-up removal pads, cotton puffs, swabs), home furnishings (towels, bathrobes, bedding), children’s products (toys, diapers), clothing, and even in paper products.¹ Consequently, global cotton production of organic cotton increased by 53% between 2005/2006 and 2006/2007, according to a survey by Organic Exchange. The U.S. is one of the world’s top ten organic cotton producing countries; the others include Turkey, India, China, Syria, Peru, Uganda, Israel and Tanzania.

Consumers want healthier products…not just healthier food products. Unfortunately, conventionally grown cotton is made with the use of many pesticides and insecticides (think the boll weevil and friends), releasing known toxins into the environment and leaving residuals in the cotton itself. In fact, 26% of the world’s pesticide is sprayed on conventionally grown cotton—with approximately 50% of the world’s cotton as genetically modified.² According to the Organic Trade Association, organic cotton is gown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment—it replenishes and maintains soil fertility, reduces the use of toxic pesticides and fertilizers, and builds biologically diverse agriculture.¹ By purchasing organic cotton, consumers indicate they want to help reduce the amount of toxins used to produce this crop and its associated products. They are using their hard-earned money to push the sales of these products into the millions of dollars. Besides all of the aforementioned reasons, many people note that organic cotton products just feel so much softer than its conventional counterpart!
