Supplements Best Means to Boost Vitamin D

April 2010

Supplements are the safest, easiest way to boost vitamin D levels, says the Harvard Heart Letter, which is spreading the word about the vitamin’s multifaceted benefits: It’s good for the heart and overall health, not just bones. Vitamin D is commonly known as the “sunshine vitamin,” because it is synthesized by the liver and kidneys upon exposure to sunlight. It also occurs naturally in foods such as salmon and other oily fish. The current recommendation for daily intake is 400 IU per day, but a number of experts have spoken out for a higher level. There are also concerns that many people are not receiving sufficient vitamin D, and seniors could be especially susceptible to deficiency as the skin generates less as it ages. People with darker skin pigmentation may also generate less of this nutrient. The Harvard Heart Letter says getting more sunlight helps boost vitamin D levels, but the safest way is to take a daily supplement that provides 800 to 1,000 IU per day.
