Vitamin D3 at doses equivalent to 2,000 International Units (IU) per day for one year is safe in adolescents and helps support healthy vitamin D levels in their bodies, according to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. Vitamin D is an important element of musculoskeletal development among children and adolescents, but a shortage of the vitamin is prevalent in youth worldwide and researchers were unsure of the safety of vitamin D doses greater than 200 IU per day in this age group. Following a one-year study of vitamin D dosage, researchers found: "Vitamin D3 at doses equivalent to 2,000 IU per day for one year is safe in adolescents and results in desirable vitamin D levels."
