Expert Panel Highlights Need for Beta-Carotene Fortification

April 2011

Vitamin A precursor beta-carotene plays an important role in attaining an adequate supply of total vitamin A, according to a consensus paper. At a recent consensus conference, experts in the field noted that many people aren't taking in enough beta-carotene. The experts said: "To fill the gap between the low intakes from sources containing pre-formed vitamin A, adequate amounts of vitamin A must additionally be supplied." The experts concluded that the current recommended amounts of consumed beta-carotene should be increased to 7 mg (11,666 IU) a day, "to ensure that at least 95% of the population consumes the recommended intake of total vitamin A."
