Cobalamin Supplementation Can Help Correct B-12 Deficiency

December 2005

Oral supplementation with high doses of orally ingested cobalamin (vitamin B-12) is as effective as cobalamin administered by intramuscular injection to correct B-12 deficiency, according to researchers in The Netherlands. In the study, 120 B-12-deficient individuals were given daily oral doses of 1.5, 100, 500 and 1,000 mcg of B-12 for 16 weeks. Researchers found that 600 mcg of cobalamin daily was the lowest dose required to help normalize B-12 levels. That's about 200 times the recommended daily allowance.
