Stronger As We Grow Older

July 2004

Recent research indicates that dietary antioxidants like vitamins C and E may help preserve muscular strength and physical performance, as our bodies grow older. In a study conducted on 986 Italian subjects aged 65 and older, plasma levels of vitamins C and E were significantly associated with muscular strength and physical performance scores assessed as walking speed, ability to rise from a chair, and balance while standing. These findings suggest that antioxidant intake may counteract the effects of free radicals on the aging process.
