Omega-3 fatty acid (DHA and EPA) supplementation helped ease neck and back pain, according to a study presented at the American Association of Neurological Surgeons Annual Meeting in New Orleans in April.
Between March and June 2004, 250 patients were asked to take a total of 1,200 mg of omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil. All of the patients had been seen by neurosurgeons and were found to have non-surgical neck or back pain.
A questionnaire was forwarded to the patients approximately one month after taking the supplement. Of the 250 patients, 125 returned the questionnaire at an average of 75 days on fish oil. The questionnaire response showed that 78% of the patients took the 1,200 mg supplementation as directed and 22% opted to take a 2,400 mg dose.
Sixty percent of the patients stated that overall pain improved and 60% stated specifically that joint pain had improved. Eighty percent were satisfied with their improvement, while 88% stated they would continue to take fish oil. There were no significant side effects reported.
