Aminos and Carbs Help The Inactive

June 2005

Essential amino acid and carbohydrate supplementation appears to support healthy muscles in people who are subjected to prolonged inactivity, according to a study completed by researchers at the Departments of Surgery, Anesthesiology and Internal Medicine, University of Texas Medical Branch and Shriners Hospitals for Children in Galveston, TX. Study results were reported in the September, 2004 issue of The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. In the study, conducted on patients restricted to bed rest, the control group received a nutritionally mixed meal every five hours, while the experimental group was given the same meal, plus 16.5 g essential amino acids and 30 g carbohydrate at the same intervals. Lean leg mass was maintained throughout the study in the experimental group, but fell in the control group. Strength loss was also more pronounced in the control group. Researchers concluded that "essential amino acid and carbohydrate supplementation may represent a viable intervention" for individuals subjected to immobility or prolonged bed rest.
