Men in Study With Low B-12 Levels Show High Levels of Homocysteine

November 2006

Under the premise that previous trials studying the links between plasma concentration of homocysteine and cardiovascular health had resulted from trials using young men, researchers at the University of Western Australia in Perth conducted their study using only men aged 75 years or older. They compared results of two regimens: a daily supplementation of 2 mg of folate, 25 mg of vitamin B-6 and 400 mcg of B-12 against placebo pills in 299 men over two years. They concluded that the homocysteine-lowering effect of B vitamins was most pronounced in men with a low baseline B-12 level or relatively high homocysteine level at the study's onset, as contrasted with men whose baseline levels of vitamin B-12 and homocysteine were relatively normal.
