Supplementation with L-carnitine and acetyl-L-carnitine appears to benefit idiopathic (unexplained) infertility in men, according to a study published in the Journal of Andrology.
According to the study, nearly 22% of infertile men with enlarged varicose veins in the scrotum who took L-carnitine and acetyl-L-carnitine achieved a pregnancy with their partner within nine months, compared to only two percent of men taking a placebo; the pregnancy rate increased to 38% for men taking a non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) in conjunction with the supplement.
The double blind, placebo-controlled, single-center study was carried out at the Italian Society of Reproductive Medicine Research and involved 325 men between the ages of 27 and 40. Supplemental treatment included two grams per day of L-carnitine and one gram per day of acetyl-L-carnitine, with or without a 30 mg cinnoxicam suppository every four days.
