Folic Acid May Protect Mental Function in Elderly

July 2005

New research suggests that the B-complex vitamin folic acid (folate) may protect against cognitive decline in the elderly. In an analysis of the effects of plasma B-vitamin levels in 499 people aged 70 to 79, after seven years, subjects with the lowest folate levels were most likely to exhibit the most extensive cognitive decline. The study authors concluded that "the risk of developing cognitive decline might be reduced through dietary folate intake."
