Children suffering from migraines may benefit from taking an extract of butterbur root, according to a study published in Headache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain. Scientists acknowledged that past studies have shown the effectiveness of butterbur in reducing the frequency of migraines in adults, but have not focused on children.
Of the 108 patients in the latest study, 29 were children between six and nine years old and 79 were adolescents with a maximum age of 17. Participants had suffered from migraines for at least one year before being tested. Patients were treated with 50 mg to 150 mg of butterbur root extract, depending on age, for a period of four months.
Results showed that 77% of all patients reported that the frequency of their migraine attacks was cut by at least 50% with a total reduction of migraine attacks of 63% among all study participants. Ninety-one percent of patients noted improvement after four months of treatment, leading researchers to recommend butterbur for youngsters.
