Rose Hips Lessens Osteoarthritis Pain

November 2005

rose hips

An herbal preparation made from a rare Danish rose hip subspecies (Rosa canina) may reduce osteoarthritis (OA), according to the results of a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded crossover trial involving 94 patients with OA of the hip or knee.

Forty-seven patients were given 5 g of the preparation per day for three months and the rest of the subjects received a placebo for the same period of time. The groups were then switched for another three months. After the first three weeks of treatment patients were allowed to use rescue medications.

Compared to placebo, the rose hip preparation significantly reduced pain after three weeks and patientsÂ’ use of rescue medications were reduced significantly. At three weeks, disability, stiffness, and severity of disease remained unchanged, but were reduced significantly after three months of treatment.
