A recent study conducted by scientists in Utah, Illinois, New Mexico and Maryland adds further support to the growing scientific literature demonstrating the benefits of glucosamine and chondroitin for joint health. The multi-centered Glucosamine/chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT) involved nearly 1,500 osteoarthritis patients with an average age of 40. Subjects had knee pain for at least six months and x-ray evidence of knee osteoarthritis.
Researchers noted that "glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are widely promoted to 'reduce joint pain and provide support for healthy cartilage and joint function.' GAIT was designed to rigorously assess the efficacy and safety of these agents alone and in combination."
Study subjects supplemented with 1,500 mg per day of glucosamine HCl and/or 1,200 mg per day of chondroitin sulfate vs. 200 mg per day of the common prescription pain medication celecoxib or placebo for 24 weeks.
Preliminary results indicate that both celecoxib and a glucosamine/chondroitin combination significantly reduced knee pain compared to placebo, and that all treatments were well tolerated by the study subjects.
Researchers concluded that "The combination of glucosamine and chondroitin is effective in treating moderate to severe knee pain due to osteoarthritis."
